Brandur Olsen strike caps shock Faroe Islands win over Greece

Olsen strike caps shock Faroes win

Greece's torrid Euro 2016 qualifying campaign suffered another setback as the Faroe Islands registered their second victory over them in the space of eight months.

Goals from Hallur Hansson and Brandur Olsen were enough to see the 2004 champions leave Torshavn with a 2-1 defeat.

The Faroes almost went in front on 17 minutes when Orestis Karnezis was forced to make a solid save from Olsen, before Panagiotis Kone's in-swinging corner saw Gunnar Nielsen scramble to keep the ball out of the net.

However, the home side took the lead just after the half-hour mark as Hansson placed his low shot into the right corner of Karnezis's net as the minnows looked for a repeat of their famous win in Athens last November.

Greece conceded a second midway through the second period as a well-struck shot from Olsen left the Udinese keeper beaten.

Sergio Markarian's team set up a grandstand finish when Socratis Papaststhopoulos headed home from a corner six minutes from time.

However, the Faroes held on for a famous victory, which moves them into fourth place in Group F, above Finland and Greece.
