Gibraltar vs Faroe Islands - prediction, team news, lineups

In each side's fifth Group L game of the European World Cup qualifiers, Gibraltar will welcome Faroe Islands to Europa Point Stadium on Monday.

The hosts are last in fifth place with no points and failure to win on Monday could eliminate them, whereas their fourth-placed opponents have three points but were beaten 1-0 by Croatia on Friday in their most recent qualifying match.

Match preview

Gibraltar lost 1-0 against Albania in an international friendly on Thursday, and they suffered a 2-1 defeat on June 9 against the visitors in their last group game, a match in which they had taken a lead in the 23rd minute.

Los Llanis have only found the back of the net once in their last four outings in all competitions, and they have conceded 16 times in Group L, at least 11 more than any other team.

The hosts must claim a top-two finish in order to have a chance of advancing to World Cup 2026, but they already trail second-placed Croatia by nine points with four games to play.

Gibraltar have been beaten in every single one of their 24 World Cup qualifiers, and boss Scott Wiseman's side have failed to triumph in any of their past eight in all competitions, losing their last five.

Team 54 are also winless in their four most recent home fixtures, and they have been defeated in their past three at Europa Point Stadium, conceding 12 while scoring no goals.

Faroe Islands can have no complaints with their result against Croatia considering the victors produced 2.6 xG, 26 shots and three big chance, whereas they only mustered six attempts, with just one of those efforts made from inside the box in the second half.

The visitors have only scored in two of their five group outings, failing to keep a clean sheet in all of their qualifiers so far.

Head coach Eydun Klakstein's side have faced their hosts on four occasions, winning twice and avoiding defeat in their last three.

Landslidid head to Europa Point Stadium having been beaten in five of their past six in all competitions, with their only victory in that time a 2-1 win against Gibraltar on June 9.

Faroe Islands have succumbed to losses in each of their four most recent fixtures on the road, losing by a cumulative score of 5-1.

Team News

Gibraltar striker Tjay De Barr is a candidate to feature up front between wide forwards Liam Jessop and Julian Del Rio.

In the middle of the pitch, expect Julian Valarino to start as a number six, with James Scanlon and Nicholas Pozo either side of him.

Full-backs Ethan Jolley and Patrick Mcclafferty may form part of a four-man defence also consisting of Graeme Torrilla and Bernardo Lopes.

As for Faroe Islands, goalkeeper Mattias Lamhauge may be shielded by centre-backs Gunnar Vatnhamar, Odmar Faero and Andrias Edmundsson.

Brandur Hendriksson Olsen and Jakup Andreasen could be selected to start in a double pivot, while number nine Meinhard Olsen is likely to lead the line.

Gibraltar possible starting lineup:

Banda; Jolley, Torrilla, Lopes, McClafferty; Scanlon, Valarino, Pozo; Jessop, De Barr, Rio

Faroe Islands possible starting lineup:

Lamhauge; Faero, Vatnhamar, Edmundsson; Danielsen, B Olsen, Andreasen, Davidsen; Frederiksberg, M Olsen, Sorensen

We say: Gibraltar 1-2 Faroe Islands

Considering Gibraltar have never won a qualifying game in their World Cup history, it is unlikely that the hosts will change their record on Monday.

Faroe Islands' defensive displays have room for improvement, but despite some concerns at the back, the visitors should still be expected to win.
