Roberto Martinez in the dark over Gareth Barry injury

Everton boss Roberto Martinez admits that he does not yet know the extent of Gareth Barry's injury following the 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed that he is 'hoping for the best' after Gareth Barry came off injured in today's 1-1 draw at Everton.

The veteran midfielder had to be stretchered off the field at the Stadium of Light with a suspected ankle injury following a challenge by Jordi Gomez after 11 minutes.

"He's gone straight to hospital for an x-ray to see the extent of the injury," Martinez told BBC Sport. "We are hoping to hear the best."

Leighton Baines struck a 76th-minute penalty to deny the Black Cats after Sebastian Larsson fired them ahead earlier in the half, a result that the Spaniard is happy with.

The Toffees boss added: "Any point is a good point. it's a positive result, we showed incredible response and character to going 1-0 down."

Martinez's side dropped to 10th in the Premier League table.
