Roberto Martinez: 'Chelsea draw is heartbreaking'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has described his side's 3-3 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this afternoon as "heartbreaking".

The Toffees looked poised to win for just the second time in nine Premier League games and do the double over Chelsea for the first time since the 1978-79 season when Ramiro Funes Mori put the visitors ahead in the 90th minute.

However, John Terry atoned for an earlier own goal with the equaliser from an offside position, with that goal coming in the eighth minute of injury time when only seven had been signalled.

"The fourth official made it clear it was time, before the ball was played into the box. It's not a debate. We had to play seven minutes of injury time and the last action happens at seven minutes and 51 seconds. That would be a debatable point - how long you want to play. But to have a player two yards offside in the box is unacceptable," Martinez told reporters.

"John Terry with the final touch is two yards offside. There's no reason to get that decision wrong. It doesn't come down to the interpretation of the referee at all. The offside decision is as clear as you're going to see. It's a major error.

"It's not a decision which could be in the balance. That makes it difficult to take. It's a heartbreaking moment for us, because we deserved the three points. The refereeing today wasn't up to the level and that's very, very frustrating. It's cost us two points."

The result keeps Everton in the bottom half of the Premier League table, now 10 points adrift of the Champions League places.
