Roberto Martinez backs Ross Barkley, Paul Gascoigne comparison

Roberto Martinez believes that it is a "phenomenal compliment" for young Everton star Ross Barkley to be compared with Paul Gascoigne.

On Thursday, Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson likened the 20-year-old to the England legend, who is widely considered one of the most gifted players of his generation.

"We spoke a lot about Ross," the Spaniard told reporters. "He is a very unique footballer and will draw those comparisons. He can bring memories of many different footballers.

"It is a phenomenal compliment to him for someone to say they see parts of Paul Gascoigne in Ross. I mentioned [former Germany international] Michael Ballack last season but, ultimately, Ross Barkley is himself."

Everton travel away to Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.
