Everton defender Leighton Baines: 'We aren't doing ourselves justice'

Baines: 'We aren't doing ourselves justice'

Everton defender Leighton Baines has admitted that his side must record another win if confidence is to improve at Goodison Park.

On Sunday afternoon, Baines featured as Everton suffered a 5-2 defeat at home to Arsenal, a result which was the club's fourth loss in six league matches and one which left the Toffees in the relegation zone.

Manager Ronald Koeman allegedly faces a fight to keep his job with the Merseyside outfit, and Baines has acknowledged that the players have been under-performing this season.

The 32-year-old is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying: "I did feel going into the game we were going to win it. I believed that. I was looking forward to the game and believed it was perfect for us. Going a goal in front, it had that feeling, but, unfortunately, it did not turn out that way.

"The obvious way to lift confidence is by finding a way to win again. We have been trying to do that for the past few weeks. Everyone will have an opinion about what we need to do, that is what the game is about.

"I have been in teams that have been on unbelievable runs of form and, with the exact same players, have been in a rut and not been able to string together any results. It is hard sometimes to understand why. We have a good group and a good manager and, unfortunately, we are not doing ourselves or the football club justice at the moment."

Everton now face three successive matches on the road, against Chelsea, Leicester City and Lyon respectively.
