Sam Allardyce insists that referee Craig Pawson's decision to award Everton a penalty against Liverpool in Sunday's Merseyside derby draw was the right call.

Sam Allardyce has stressed that referee Craig Pawson's decision to award Everton a penalty in Sunday's Merseyside derby was correct.

The Toffees found themselves under siege against a dominant Liverpool side at Anfield on Sunday but succeeded in leaving their rivals' ground with a 1-1 draw.

Mohamed Salah put the Reds in front on the stroke of half time but Everton levelled through Wayne Rooney's spot kick after Dejan Lovren was adjudged to have brought Dominic Calvert-Lewin down in the box.

Jurgen Klopp made his feelings known after the game, but Allardyce brushed off his opposite number's comments and agreed with Pawson's decision to point to the spot.

"I don't think you can disagree with the penalty - Lovren pushed Calvert-Lewin over," the 63-year-old told BBC Sport after the match. "[Klopp can] moan all he wants, it's a penalty.

"If you push somebody in the box - our player is goal side, so if he's not touched, he doesn't go over but he was touched, he goes over and it's a penalty.

"It's an extremely brave decision to give that for us in a derby at Anfield and the referee got it right."

Everton have lost just one of their past six Premier League games, after losing six of their previous eight.
