Roberto Martinez: 'Phil Jagielka not yet ready to play 90 minutes'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez hints that Phil Jagielka will not start the League Cup semi-final against Manchester City, but is nearing full fitness.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said that Phil Jagielka is not yet ready to play a full game having only recently returned from injury.

The centre-back was named on the bench for Sunday's match against Tottenham Hotspur having been sidelined since October with an MCL injury, but did not get on as Everton held out for a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are back in action again when they host Manchester City in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, but Martinez hinted that the weekend FA Cup game against Dagenham & Redbridge is a more likely return date for both Jagielka and Steven Pienaar.

"There are no setbacks from the Spurs game at the weekend so the same squad will be available," Martinez told reporters.

"Tom Cleverley came through well and Phil Jagielka was a big influence in the dressing room and will slowly be involved as and when - but he is not ready to play 90 minutes yet. The weekend is a more realistic target for him."

"[James McCarthy] won't make it for the next two games [but] probably by the end of the month he will return. [Pienaar] has been working really well and should be available for the weekend."

Martinez also confirmed that the club are in talks with Monaco over the transfer of Kevin Mirallas.
