Gareth Taylor wants Manchester City Women to complete FA Cup double

Two late goals in extra time earned City a third win in four campaigns.

Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor challenged his side to complete an historic Women's FA Cup double after their 3-1 extra-time victory over Everton in Sunday's final.

City lifted a third FA Cup in four seasons after substitutes Georgia Stanway and Janine Beckie scored in the second half of extra time at Wembley.

The 50th Women's FA Cup final had been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving City with the unprecedented opportunity of lifting the trophy twice in one season.

Taylor said: "We want to challenge the players to do something that will probably never happen again and win the FA Cup twice in one season.

"We're Manchester City – we want to achieve big things and we want to make history."

United States international Sam Mewis headed City into a 40th-minute lead but Valerie Gauvin levelled on the hour mark.

City were frustrated by impressive Everton goalkeeper Sandy MacIver but England international Stanway found a way through in the 111th minute before Beckie wrapped it up with the last kick of an entertaining game.

Taylor added: "I was pretty confident going into extra time. We still continued playing our way, we kept knocking in the door and eventually it opened."

Everton boss Willie Kirk said: "We'll be back here and the players will be determined to do that.

"The club will be proud of that performance. We were great today but just fell short. It's such a young team but we'll continue to improve. Everyone can see we've got something special here."

On MacIver, he added: "She did everything she could to keep the ball out of the net. It wasn't always pretty but she was outstanding today and very much showed that, for me, she's England's number one."
