Glenn Hoddle: 'I'd play Rooney in midfield'

Glenn Hoddle believes that Wayne Rooney could be a threat for England if he were played in an advanced midfield position.

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has suggested that striker Wayne Rooney could do a job for England alongside Southampton's Adam Lallana in a midfield three.

Hoddle said that Rooney, who was deployed on the left in the defeat to Italy, would be allowed freedom to attack from deep if he played ahead of Steven Gerrard in midfield.

"Roy is going to stick with the same XI, I'm sure, and whether he switches Rooney inside and pushes Raheem Sterling on to the wing is debatable," William Hill quotes Hoddle as saying.

"However, I personally would make one change, one that would completely change the shape of the team and would have a huge effect on the way England play. It would, in my opinion, make all the difference.

"I would have Gerrard sitting in front of the back four, and ahead of him Rooney and Lallana - replacing Jordan Henderson - with Danny Welbeck and Sterling in the side positions."

England's clash against Uruguay kicks off at 8pm.
