Team News: Bukayo Saka starts for England against Senegal, Raheem Sterling absent

Bukayo Saka starts for England against Senegal, Raheem Sterling absent

Bukayo Saka has returned to the starting lineup for England's World Cup 2022 last-16 clash with Senegal, but Raheem Sterling is absent due to personal reasons.

Saka had started England's first two Group B games against Iran and the USA but was then dropped for Tuesday's meeting with Wales, where Marcus Rashford scored a brace in his place.

However, Rashford's double has not been enough for the Manchester United man to retain his place in the first XI, as Arsenal starlet Saka returns to the right-hand side of the attack.

England have also revealed that Sterling is missing from the matchday squad due to a family matter, so Phil Foden keeps his spot on the left in support of Harry Kane.

Gareth Southgate has stuck with the 4-3-3 formula from last week's victory over Wales, as Jordan Henderson starts alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in the middle.

Kyle Walker retains his place on the right-hand side of the backline alongside Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and John Stones, while number one Jordan Pickford seeks a third successive World Cup clean sheet.

England starting lineup: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Bellingham, Rice, Henderson; Saka, Kane, Foden

Subs: Ramsdale, Pope, Trippier, Alexander-Arnold, Coady, Dier, Phillips, Gallagher, Maddison, Mount, Grealish, Rashford, Wilson
