Andros Townsend: 'Margin of victory does not matter to England'

Townsend: 'Margin of win doesn't matter'

Andros Townsend has claimed that it did not matter how many goals England scored at Wembley in the 5-0 win over San Marino on Thursday night.

After making it two wins in as many games in Group E, Townsend suggested that England's ambitions to win the group comfortably means that the margin of victory did not matter to the hosts.

"The main thing was that we got the three points," the 23-year-old told ITV. "We're hoping not to win the group on goal difference, we're hoping to win it by two or three points, so two, three, four, five tonight doesn't really matter that much."

Townsend, who scored his side's fourth goal, was also keen to pay tribute to Roy Hodgson after the England manager elected to keep him in the squad, despite his struggles to secure a regular place in the Tottenham Hotspur team in the early stages of the season.

"The manager has always shown faith in me, and although it was only against San Marino it was nice to come on and get my goal and repay the manager's faith," the winger added.

England continue their qualifying campaign against Estonia on Sunday.
