Jonjo Shelvey: 'England need a central midfielder like me'

Newcastle United's Jonjo Shelvey claims that the England senior squad is "crying out for a central midfielder" like him, having gone two years since his last cap.

Jonjo Shelvey has claimed that he can still play a part on the international stage after returning to the top flight with Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old has been capped six times by England at senior level, the last of those coming nearly two years ago in the 2-0 friendly win against France at Wembley Stadium.

Former Liverpool and Swansea City ace Shelvey has not given up hope of returning to the Three Lions' fold in the future, however, as he believes that the squad is "crying out for" a central midfielder of his quality.

"If you look at the competition, we're crying out for a central midfielder for our country, in my opinion," he told the Daily Mail.

"But it's just a matter of saying the right things in the press and things like that, that's what it goes on these days. It's so fickle, if you like. All I can do is just show in my performances that I warrant a place in the England team."

Shelvey featured 42 times for Newcastle last season in their Championship promotion-winning campaign, playing a direct part in 13 goals.
