Alan Shearer: 'Wayne Rooney should produce in major tournaments'

Shearer: 'Rooney should produce in finals'

Alan Shearer has hinted that Wayne Rooney still needs to perform for England in major finals to be considered a true great.

The Manchester United striker scored his 50th international goal in the 2-0 victory over Switzerland on Tuesday evening to become England's record goalscorer, moving ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton.

Shearer, who scored 30 times for the Three Lions between 1992 and 2000, has said that Rooney's record in tournaments could be better.

"The accusation that will always be thrown at him is that he hasn't produced at a major tournament," Shearer told BBC Sport.

"I can understand that and also people will say there are easier games nowadays, but his record goals per games is excellent.

"It's not his fault extra teams or so-called weaker teams were put in competitions. He did his job, he scored goals and he broke the record."

Rooney has scored six times in major finals.
