Wayne Rooney breaks record as England down Switzerland

Wayne Rooney becomes England's leading goalscorer after finding the net in a 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley.

Wayne Rooney became England's all-time leading scorer as the Three Lions earned a 2-0 victory over Switzerland at Wembley this evening to maintain their 100% record in Euro 2016 qualifying.

The Manchester United forward scored his 50th international goal from the penalty spot, having matched Bobby Charlton's long-standing record against San Marino at the weekend.

The hosts were dealt a blow inside the opening minute when Fabian Delph limped off the pitch with a hamstring injury.

Despite that early setback, the Three Lions made a dominant start and Gary Cahill threatened with a header that was inadvertently blocked in front of the keeper by Rooney.

England created another opening when Luke Shaw found some space and delivered a low cross into the box that was turned over the bar by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Rooney then showed his danger for the first time after latching on to a pass from James Milner and placing a strike wide of the far post.

The duo combined again minutes later as Rooney slipped Milner into the box, before the Liverpool midfielder fired his low effort straight at Yann Sommer.

Switzerland were struggling to impose themselves on the match, but Xherdan Shaqiri offered a glimpse of their threat when he burst past the defence and had to be denied by the onrushing Joe Hart.

As the game edged towards half time, the Swiss had another chance to break the deadlock when Josip Drmic raced onto Shaqiri's pass and reached the edge of the box, before dragging a shot wide of the far post.

Following a goalless first half, Rooney threatened shortly after the break with a looping header that Sommer had to watch carefully.

The England captain tested Sommer again minutes later with a rasping drive from range that the keeper managed to hold.

However, it was the visitors who almost opened the scoring, when Granit Xhaka met a corner at the near post and forced Hart to turn his header behind.

Harry Kane was then brought on by England, and within 10 minutes of his arrival the Tottenham Hotspur forward made the breakthrough with a low strike into the corner after being found inside the box by Shaw.

Switzerland pushed for a late equaliser, but with six minutes left to play England were given the chance to score a second after Raheem Sterling was brought down inside the box by Xhaka.

Rooney stepped up to take the spot kick, and although Sommer got his hands to the ball, the strike proved too powerful for the keeper as it found the back of the net, ensuring a historic end to the night at Wembley.
