Glenn Hoddle: 'I would have played Leighton Baines and Ashley Cole together'

Glenn Hoddle claims that he would have played Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines in the same England side if he were still manager.

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has claimed that he would have attempted to fit Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines into the same team.

The debate has raged in the past couple of seasons, with the Everton man finally looking to have ousted Cole as the number one English left-back.

However, Hoddle thinks that Baines could play ahead of Cole in a midfield position.

"I would have looked at playing Baines and Cole together," he told ITV Sport.

"Baines has a great delivery in the final third and if you take some of his defensive duties away I think you could see a lot going forward. I think the young boy [Luke] Shaw could be a great player with his size and frame.

"It's ironic. We went 15-20 years struggling to find left-sided players but now we could have three fighting for a place in the coming months."

Cole got the nod in England's latest game and is currently involved in their friendly with Denmark.
