Sam Allardyce: 'Harry Kane should be England captain'

Allardyce: 'Kane for England captaincy'

Sam Allardyce has said that he believes Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane should be England's captain ahead of the national team's final World Cup qualifying matches.

Kane, who suffered a barren run in August, has scored 13 goals in his last eight appearances, making a case for him to receive the captaincy.

England boss Gareth Southgate is yet to choose a captain, but it is reported that midfielder Jordan Henderson and centre-back Gary Cahill are also in the running for the armband.

"[Kane] can lead by example," Allardyce told talkSPORT. "He has evolved into a world-class centre-forward and there is still room to get even better than he is already.

"As a person, in my experience, he is capable of taking the pressure of the armband, both on and off the field. He is willing to contribute to the whole success of the England team and the Tottenham team, which is what you want.

"He leads the team. Everybody is looking to him now not only to produce the goals but also to keep the flow of the forward play going for England and he is capable of doing that."

England face Slovakia at Wembley on Thursday, where a win will secure their spot in next year's World Cup.
