Derby County defender Richard Keogh backs former boss Steve McClaren

Derby County defender Richard Keogh backs Steve McClaren, under whom he captained the Rams, to succeed at Newcastle United despite the club's current winless run.

Derby County defender Richard Keogh has backed former manager Steve McClaren to succeed at Newcastle United in the midst of some heavy criticism over his team's performances.

The Republic of Ireland international, who captained the Rams under McClaren, deems the criticism harsh despite the Magpies' winless streak.

"He is a great guy and a great manager," Keogh told the Derby Telegraph.

"Football is a strange game. But I have no doubt that he will do a fantastic job for Newcastle."

Keogh was part of McClaren's Derby side that failed to reach last year's Championship playoffs following a run of just two wins in their final 13 games.
