Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly interested in signing Crystal Palace attacker Jean-Philippe Mateta during the summer transfer window.
The 28-year-old netted his first Premier League goal of the 2025-26 season on Sunday night, when the Eagles picked up a 3-0 away win at Aston Villa.
Mateta - initially joining on loan from Mainz in 2021 - has been a regular fixture and key contributor at the top end of the pitch for Palace.
Across the 2024-25 term, the Frenchman bagged 17 goals and came up with four assists as Oliver Glasner's men lifted the FA Cup.
Helping Palace secure their first-ever major honour, Mateta has netted on 46 occasions across 142 competitive matches in England.
Tottenham wanted Mateta on deadline day?
According to Sky Sports News, Crystal Palace could have lost the services of their star striker during the final knockings of the summer transfer window.
The report claims that Europa League winners Tottenham were interested in the talents of the Frenchman on deadline day.
It is understood that Thomas Frank's side enquired about the possibility of a move from South London to North London for Mateta.
However, the Lilywhites fell short of submitting a bid for the player, eventually signing Randal Kolo Muani on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Eagles supposedly turned down a £50m bid earlier in the summer for Mateta, who was wanted by Italian trio AC Milan, Atalanta BC and Juventus, as well as a host of Premier League clubs.
Wins and losses for Palace
After a historic FA Cup-winning season last term, it was almost inevitable that a club of Palace's stature would lose some of their key men to England's elite outfits.
Scoring the key goal at the Wembley final versus Manchester City, Eberechi Eze has taken his maverick skills to Arsenal this season.
Marc Guehi was in the process of completing a medical at Liverpool before Palace - under strict instruction from head coach Glasner - pulled the plug on the defender's proposed Merseyside move.
