Preview: Crystal Palace vs. Brentford - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Premier League clash between Crystal Palace and Brentford, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Fresh off a hard-fought defeat to the reigning two-time Premier League Champions on Saturday, Crystal Palace return to Selhurst Park in search of their first London Derby victory of the domestic season when they host Brentford on Tuesday.

The Eagles let a two-goal lead against Manchester City slip away in their previous fixture, losing 4-2, while Brentford came back to earn a point once again, drawing Everton 1-1.

Even though the end result did not go their way, Patrick Viera had a lot of positives to say about his team's performance at the Etihad Stadium, believing they were unlucky to come away empty-handed despite showing tons of character and discipline throughout the contest.

Palace looked overwhelmed in the second half against City as they struggled to cope with the collective quality of the opposition, particularly Erling Braut Haaland, who scored a hat-trick inside 20 minutes, sending the visitors to defeat for the second time this season.

Dating back to last season, their loss last weekend was the third time in their previous four Premier League affairs that the Eagles failed to win when leading at the interval.

They come into this contest having lost only two of their last nine EPL affairs at Selhurst Park, posting five clean sheets over that span.

Crystal Palace have won just two of their last 19 Premier League London derbies, picking up 3-0 wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal last season, while they drew Brentford 0-0 in both of their 2021-22 league matches.

With eight goals conceded after four fixtures, it is the most this club have given up at this stage of a Premier League campaign since allowing the same amount in 2014-15.

Brentford have been down but never out in their EPL fixtures this season, as they collected their fifth point of the year on Saturday.

The Bees have trailed in three of their four league matches this season at half time but have come away with a result on two occasions.

Despite being behind after 24 minutes against Everton on Saturday, Thomas Frank was pleased with the overall performance of his side, who created plenty of chances with 58% possession and five efforts on target.

They have picked up points in four of their last seven Premier League affairs in which they had conceded the opener after losing eight of their previous eight fixtures when shipping first.

All four of their road goals scored so far in this campaign have come in the second half, while they have rescued two matches this year in the latter stages, scoring the equaliser versus Leicester City in the 86th minute and levelling their game against the Toffees with a strike in the 84th minute.

Heading into this match, the Bees are winless in their last four away games versus Crystal Palace, with their last triumph coming back in March 1957 (2-0), though they have only lost one of their previous 12 league fixtures played on a Tuesday.

Team News

An own-goal from John Stones gave Palace an ideal start against Man City over the weekend, while Joachim Andersen doubled the advantage after 21 minutes as he met the Eberechi Eze corner well for his first of the season.

Vicente Guaita collected two clean sheets against the Bees last season though he is still searching for his first of this campaign.

Their leading goalscorer Wilfried Zaha, who has three tallies in the current domestic campaign, is out with a leg injury, James McArthur could soon be recovered from a sore groin and Jack Butland remains sidelined with a broken wrist.

It is unknown how long James Tomkins will be out with a muscle issue, Nathan Ferguson will not be available until early September because of a foot injury, while Tyrick Mitchell could be ready to return after previously suffering a knock.

Brentford substitute Vitaly Janelt scored 15 minutes after coming on for Christian Norgaard on Saturday, with fellow substitute Keane Lewis-Potter providing the assist.

David Raya has one shutout this season, and he did not concede in his two previous matches against Palace, Ivan Toney and Josh Dasilva remain tied for the team lead in goals with two, while Toney also even with Mathias Jensen for most assists (two).

Kristoffer Ajer might be ready to return pending a fitness test, Ethan Pinnock is out with a knee issue, Sergi Canos has a hamstring strain and Pontus Jansson is nursing a foot injury.

Crystal Palace possible starting lineup:
Guaita; Mitchell, Andersen, Ward, Clyne; Eze, Doucoure, Olise, Schlupp; Ayew; Edouard

Brentford possible starting lineup:
Raya; Hickey, Jorgensen, Mee, Henry; Dasilva, Norgaard, Jensen, Janelt; Lewis-Potter, Toney

SM words green background

We say: Crystal Palace 2-2 Brentford

There is a lot to be encouraged about in the early going for both of these teams, who have shown plenty of attacking intent so far this season, and we believe the resiliency of Brentford will come to the forefront once again to steal a couple of points from the home side.
