Coventry will play in the third tier of English football for the first time in 48 years after going down limply to already-relegated Doncaster at the Ricoh.

Coventry City will play in the third tier of English football for the first time in 48 years after they failed to beat already-relegated Doncaster Rovers this afternoon.

In the end it made no difference that Coventry couldn't pick up three points as Bristol City were victorious against Barnsley to secure safety.

Clive Platt almost put the home side ahead midway through the opening half but saw his header cleared off the line.

Coventry continued to press and tested Gary Woods in the Donny goal with regularity but were unable to find the breakthrough.

News of Bristol's second against Barnsley sent cries of derision ringing round the Ricoh Arena as the Sky Blues faithful learnt their fate.

Their misery was compounded ten minutes from time as Richard Keogh was dismissed for a professional foul in the area, with James Hayter stepping up to tuck home the resulting penalty for the visitors.

Simon Gillett doubled Rovers' lead in the 87th minute to give the travelling Donny faithful something to cheer about.

With just one game of the season left, Coventry now lie an insurmountable seven points adrift of safety.
