Papiss Cisse scores twice as Newcastle give their Champions League hopes a boost with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle United have given their Champions League hopes a huge boost with an impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues started dominantly on a wet night in London as Fernando Torres blasted his shot over Tim Krul's crossbar within the first minute.

Newcastle's first opening came from Cheick Tiote after the midfielder's low effort was palmed away by the sprawling Petr Cech.

The hosts continued to push, but it was the Magpies that made the breakthrough on 19 minutes when Cisse lashed in a spectacular left-footed strike.

Alan Pardew's side were then happy to let their opponents attack, only for Chelsea to prove toothless up front.

There was time for one last chance before the half-time whistle, but Florent Malouda could only head wide from a whipped Torres cross.

There was bad news for Newcastle at the start of the second half when Tiote was stretchered off in a neck brace following an aerial collision with Jon Obi Mikel.

Hatem Ben Arfa fired his shot high and wide, while substitute Didier Drogba planted his free kick straight at Krul as Chelsea again struggled in the final third.

Roberto Di Matteo's side wanted a penalty minutes later, but their appeals were waved away when Drogba collided with a defiant Fabricio Coloccini.

Newcastle landed the killer blow in injury time when the prolific Cisse fired in an outrageous swerving drive for his 13th goal of the season.
