Chris Sutton: 'Antonio Conte appointment makes no sense'

Chelsea's decision to appoint Antonio Conte "doesn't make any sense", according to the club's ex-striker Chris Sutton.

Former Chelsea centre-forward Chris Sutton has said that the club's appointment of Antonio Conte "doesn't make any sense".

The Blues confirmed on Monday that the 46-year-old will take charge at Stamford Bridge once his commitments with Italy at Euro 2016 are over.

However, Sutton has claimed that Conte is too "similar" to former boss Jose Mourinho, which may see him clash with the players.

"If the players have downed tools before there is every suggestion that, with Conte being a similar type to Mourinho, they will down tools again," he told BBC Sport.

"If he comes in and starts hitting the players with a whip, are they going to respond? Bringing in a similar type of manager to Mourinho in Conte doesn't make any sense to me."

During his stint as Juventus head coach, Conte guided the club to three Serie A titles.
