Live Commentary: Wigan Athletic 0-2 Chelsea - as it happened

Live text coverage of the Premier League encounter between Wigan Athletic and Chelsea at the DW Stadium, courtesy of Sports Mole.

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live text coverage of this afternoon's first Premier League encounter between Wigan Athletic and Chelsea at the DW.

The two Robertos in either dugout will be looking for a positive start to the season, with Chelsea boss Di Matteo in particular hoping for a win against one of the favourites for relegation.

The hosts' boss Martinez can call upon attack-minded Victor Moses, who is available despite plenty of interest from Chelsea over the course of the summer.

Follow all the grief, goals and glaring misses below.

3.30pmThat's about it from me. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for coverage. Why not head over to our live commentary of the second game between City and Saints with Matt Law. Go on!

3.28pmLampard and Hazard are speaking to Sky Sports and the former says that Hazard was "brilliant" on his PL debut. The Belgian's English isn't too good but he is "happy" with his performance.

3.27pmClick here for our match report on Chelsea's winning start to the season.

3.25pmMartinez won't be too displeased as there was plenty to be positive about for Wigan. The Latics passed the ball about nicely enough and they'll come up against a lot of defences worse than this strong Chelsea back four.

3.23pmNext up for Chelsea is a home match against Reading on Wednesday, while Wigan travel to newly-promoted Southampton on Saturday.

3.21pmIt's a routine win for Chelsea and a perfect start to the season. Wigan showed what they're about following the two early goals but Chelsea didn't need to do much more for most of the game. Hazard impressed, while the Blues' back four looked resolute as ever.

FULL-TIME:Wigan 0-2 Chelsea

90+3 minFigueroa's deep cross finds Boyce but the right-back was always leaning back and his header is way over. Nearly over.

90+1 minJack Rodwell starts for Man City against Southampton in this afternoon's other PL game.

90 minGomez and Kone link up nicely, with the former's shot curling away from goal. Three minutes added on.

89 minIvanovic is in the area but his cutback manages to miss three Chelsea players in the area!

87 minChelsea have a free kick near the area as Torres is felled. Meireles finds Luiz with the delivery but the Brazilian's header can't beat Al Habsi.

85 minChance for Wigan as Moses squares for Kone, whose shot is stopped by Cech, with the rebound ballooning up for Gomez. The Spaniard decides to go spectacular but his well-struck overhead flies wide.

85 minBooking for Lampard from a wee while earlier for a challenge on Moses that Jones hasn't forgotten.

84 minBeautiful passing from Wigan ends when Bertrand blocks the cross. From the resulting corner Kone heads wide from a couple of yards. Big miss.

83 minSub for Chelsea as Raul Meireles replaces Mata, who's had a quiet day at the office.

82 minCech is alive to the danger as Kone looks to latch onto a loose ball.

81 minFinal sub for Wigan as Ben Watson comes on for McArthur.

80 minBoyce has time to put a ball in but Terry is there again, this time diving to head away the danger.

79 minReally fizzing out this one now. Chelsea are happy to pass it round at the back and the fight seems to have left Wigan.

76 minVery un-Ashley Cole play from the left-back there as he dilly-dallies on the ball but gets away with it as Wigan fail to capitalise.

74 minIt's a powerful low effort from Gomez but it's straight at Cech, who holds on well.

73 minLampard jumps in on Gomez and the Latics have a free kick about 25 yards out. They need this to go in really.

72 minMcCarthy whips over a dangerous ball but it's cut out by Terry, who's been solid as ever this afternoon.

70 minGomez's blushes are spared as he heads horribly wide with the offside flag up.

68 minChance for Chelsea as Oscar shows a great turn of pace to latch onto a Torres header before pulling his low shot wide of the far post. He's speedy this one.

67 minSub for Wigan as new boy Arouna Kone takes the place of Di Santo. The Ivorian is sporting a standout blonde hairdo and peculiarly wearing the number two.

65 minStraight after the Torres chance and Wigan almost get one back as Moses fires across the area, with Terry putting out for a corner at the back post.

65 minSub: Oscar on for the impressive Hazard.

64 minOff the line! Torres is set free down the middle and he shrugs off the attentions of Ramis before lifting over Al Habsi. The ball dribbles towards the line and Ramis gets there to clear the danger.

63 minI'm psychic! The Brazilian receives some final words from Di Matteo and will enter the fray shortly.

62 minDi Matteo's gotta be bringing Oscar on soon, surely?

61 minLoose pass from Hazard and Boyce leads a Wigan break that ends with Moses's curling effort drifting wide of the far post.

60 minCaldwell finds Di Santo with a lovely angled pass but the striker's shot is weak and dribbles past Cech's near post.

59 minBertrand cuts out a scuffed pass from Alcaraz but can't make the most of it.

57 minYellow for McArthur as he scythes down Lampard in the middle of the park.

56 minGroans of derision from the home fans as McCarthy sends a pass out of play. Naff.

54 minDelightful turn from Bertrand as he streaks clear down the left. The young wideman finds Lampard with a cutback but he takes a touch and is tackled.

53 minIvanovic's cross is deflected out to Cole and the left-back finds the stand as he volley high, wide and not very handsome.

51 minMoses tees up Figueroa for a cross but the left-back's delivery is easy peasy for Cech to gather.

51 minChelsea are just slowing down the pace a little here. No need for the visitors to take any risks.

49 minHere's a very early change in the second half for the hosts. Jordi Gomez on for Maloney, who looks to be struggling with a knock of some sort.

48 minDi Santo goes in late on Terry and that was rather unnecessary. Very, very late.

47 minCech punches clear but the ball is sent back in by Alcaraz and Di Santo has time at the back post. Lampard thwarts the former Chelsea man though with an excellent block.

46 minThat's a clumsy challenge from Luiz, who is on a booking, and Wigan have a free kick left of the area in a good position. Maloney to take...

2.32pmPlayers are back out, no changes from either side and we're off in the second half.

2.29pmHere's what I mean summed up in a lovely stat from @OptaJoe on Twitter: "Chelsea only had two shots in the first half vs Wigan - both were goals."

2.27pmCan Wigan do anything to get back into this? Yes, they looked arguably the better side after the two goals but they are two down. I can't see them getting a pair of goals in the second half and Chelsea could be super-dangerous on the break.

2.24pmJust watching a replay of the first goal and it really was a beautiful turn from the Belgian. He also showed great strength in earning the penalty.

2.23pm"Spot on." That's what Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp thinks of Hazard's first-half performance.

2.22pmWhat's that? You want a bitesize half-time report of the opening 45? Here you go.

2.20pmChelsea fans have been heard singing "Victor Moses, we'll see you soon!" Optimistic.

2.18pmHazard will take the plaudits for both goals, with fellow debutant Ramis the villain on both occasions.

HALF-TIME:Wigan 0-2 Chelsea

45+2 minIt'll be Maloney to take and the Scot guides it over the wall nicely but straight into the arms of Cech.

45+1 minBig chance for the hosts as Di Santo is laid in. The tall forward takes a horrible first touch though as can't beat Cech from inside the area. The Latics have a free kick about 24 yards out now though...

45+1 minTwo minutes added on here.

45 minCorner in the final minute of the half for Wigan as Ivanovic dispossesses Figueroa.

43 minBrilliant from Moses as he chests down a pass, flicks over Cole before wasting a good position with an overhit cross.

42 minAnd just as I say that the diminutive Spaniard volleys a crossfield pass on a sixpence to Cole.

41 minMata's not looking his normal composed self today and he pings a ball meant for Torres out of play. Not good.

40 minHazard is released down the left but he's crowded out as Caldwell mops up.

38 minChance for Wigan as Moses works some space up against Cole and fires a shot across goal that Cech parries away for a corner. Bright stuff from the youngster upon whom the spotlight shines.

37 minMcArthur slaps Hazard on the back of the head accidentally and Chelsea have an FK just inside the Latics' half. Mata looks to find Torres with a clever ball but the number nine has again strayed past the last man.

36 minChelsea really haven't done too much since the first 10 but they don't need to be overzealous with a two-goal lead.

35 minCaution for Luiz as he brings down Figueroa. Bit harsh that as the Wigan players have escaped a booking for worse.

34 minDavid Luiz rampages forward and looks to feed Torres but the Spaniard is a good yard or two offside.

32 minHazard has been really lively and the new Blue is hacked down by McCarthy, who also gets away without a caution.

31 minMcArthur brings down Mata in the centre circle but escapes a booking from Mr Jones.

29 minThis really is much better from Wigan. They're continuing to hound down the ball when Chelsea have it and they're much the better side at the moment. Just a shame about those first seven minutes!

27 minHas Petr Cech got away with one there? The Chelsea keeper's toes are on the edge of the area as he reaches to collect the ball. The Wigan players are convinced his hands were outside the box and I'm inclined to agree with them.

25 minAnother corner for Wigan as they continue their improved play. Maloney and McArthur duff up a short corner as Hazard cuts out the danger.

23 minSome intricate one-touch play between Lampard and Mata results in the latter fizzing over a low ball towards Torres but Al Habsi is alive to the danger and collects.

21 minMata is marking Caldwell and that's a mismatch if ever I've seen one. Maloney's delivery is headed clear but it's been a much better second ten minutes from the Latics after the horror start.

20 minMoses has his legs taken away by Lampard and the home side have a free kick to the right of the area. Maloney to take...

20 minChance for Wigan as Di Santo meets a Boyce cross at the back post and heads just over. He's a former Chelsea boy, remember.

18 minMike Jones points to his shoulder as Alcaraz bundles over Torres as the Spaniard looked to burst into the area. I'd say that was a foul, not a shoulder barge. Would've been another pen too.

17 minThis is definitely a more deeper role for Mata than he usually plays. Bertrand is the one joining Hazard and Torres further forward, with Lampard and Mata pulling the strings further back.

16 minWigan have a corner but the bright Maloney can only find the right boot of Mikel in the middle of the area.

11 minYellow card for Caldwell as he clatters into Hazard from behind. That was really nasty from the Scot.

10 minThose of you who put Hazard in your Fantasy Football teams will be absolutely delighted as he's got BOTH assists so far.

9 minMaloney steps over to earn a yard of space and fires in a low cross but it's well cleared by Chelsea.

7 minHe's got away with that one there, has Lamps. Al Habsi, who saved more penalties than any other keeper last term, dives straight over the low pen to his right. Lightning start from the European Champions.

7 minGOAL! LAMPARD DRILLS IT UNDER AL HABSI!

6 minHazard earns another assist as he is chopped down by Ivan Ramis on the right side of the area.

6 minPENALTY TO CHELSEA!

2 minIt's a top goal from the right-back and Hazard provides a lovely assist. The Belgian turns in the middle of the park, breaking away from challenges before laying in the Serbian, who wasn't tracked and drills low past Al Habsi at the near post. What a start for the visitors.

2 minGOAL! IVANOVIC PUTS CHELSEA AHEAD EARLY!

2 minChelsea's midfield five looks very interchangeable and fluid, with Lampard, Bertrand, Hazard and Mata all very confident going forward. Mikel will just sit in front of the back four and pass the ball no more than 10 yards.

1 minWigan kick off and the seventh Premier League game of the season is underway!

1.29pmWigan are in their white and blue striped shirts, with Chelsea sporting a rather nasty black kit with yellow detailing all over the place. Mike Jones will referee this one. Here we go.

1.25pmHere are the players in the tunnel and surprise surprise, Ali Al Habsi is cracking the jokes. What nationality is the Wigan stopper is always a good question. Omani.

1.23pmI'm a little annoyed that Oscar isn't starting today as he really looks a talent. He should come on in the second half and expect him to replace fellow new boy Hazard.

1.20pmThere's one debutant in the Wigan side and it's Ivan Ramis, the Spaniard is set to start in the centre of defence and he'll have a certain Fernando Torres to deal with.

1.17pmHere's Latics boss Martinez speaking to Sky Sports. He says that he's happy to have kept the majority of his squad over the summer and is looking to reproduce the same form from the end of last season that kept them up. He adds that there'll be no problem with Moses facing the club who so want to acquire his talents.

1.15pmDo we think Chelsea are realistic title contenders this term? I'd like to think so with their huge choice in midfield but if Torres is injured then there's little backup to spearhead the Blues' frontline. However, they did finish a mighty 25 points adrift of the two Manchester clubs last season.

1.11pmWigan haven't done too much in the transfer market thus far and could possibly lose their best player in Moses. Will he be a Chelsea player come August 31?

1.10pmAnyway, enough of Chelsea. Let's turn our attentions to the Latics. Roberto Martinez kept the club up yet again last year after looking down and out and unfortunately it should be much of the same this year.

1.08pmOne player who's a surprise absentee for the Blues is Brazilian midfielder Ramires. He's "ill".

1.06pmTorres will be a regular starter this season and that can surely only be a good thing as he looks to get back to top form. I think the Spaniard will enjoy the creativity from behind with the new signings below as well as the likes of Frank Lampard, Ramires and Raul Meireles.

1.04pmI'm looking forward to watching Chelsea this season, they've spent a lot of money this summer and almost all of it is in the same attacking midfield position with Hazard, Oscar, and Marko Marin coming in.

1.02pmTEAM NEWS: Chelsea's marquee signing Eden Hazard starts alongside Juan Mata behind Fernando Torres in the Chelsea frontline. For Wigan, Chelsea target Victor Moses does start. See the full lineups by clicking here.

1.00pmAllo allo! Should be a good game this one so let's get straight to the team news...
