Live Commentary: Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Follow live updates of today's Premier League encounter between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, courtesy of Sports Mole.

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live commentary of the Premier League encounter between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The capital rivals clash in a match which could prove decisive in terms of Champions League qualification.

Chelsea, under interim boss Roberto Di Matteo, have won four of their last five games in all competitions, while Spurs have taken just a solitary point from their last four league encounters.

Victory for Harry Redknapp's side would open up an eight-point gap over the fifth-placed Blues, but Tottenham have not won at Stamford Bridge since 1990.

min: Martin Atkinson is today's referee, and it is Chelsea who get us underway on this glorious afternoon in London. Let's hope the match is as good as the weather over Stamford Bridge.

min: It's a positive start from both teams in the early stages of the match, with the home side making most of the early running.

min: Chelsea are beginning to gain control of the match and combination play between Daniel Sturridge and Frank Lampard so nearly brought the opening goal of the afternoon.

min: The away side, buoyed by the return of key players, enjoy a spell of possession in the middle of the park, but Kyle Walker's eventual cross is blocked by Ashley Cole in the Chelsea defence.

min: Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is looking very animated on the touchline, with both teams beginning to settle into the match after a frantic opening.

min: It's good pressing from the away side to push Chelsea into their own half. Chances have been few and far between in these early stages in London.

min: Sturridge is looking busy in the early stages for the home side, but Tottenham's Scott Parker seems to be everywhere - is there a better anchorman in the Premier League?

min: Emmanuel Adebayor looks an isolated figure in the away side's attack thus far; it seems to be a defensive set-up from Redknapp, with Gareth Bale given licence to roam.

min: Chelsea seem more than happy for Tottenham to keep the ball in their own half, with the likes of John Terry and Gary Cahill dealing with the aerial threat. Still no clear chance for either side here at Stamford Bridge.

min: There has been an unusual number of long balls played by both teams in the opening 30 minutes of football. With the midfield so congested, however, it seems the most likely avenue.

min: Big moment in the match, Frank Lampard tumbles in the area under the challenge of Younes Kaboul, but referee Atkinson waves play on.

min: There still hasn't been a single shot on target for either side. Unfortunately the weather has yet to be matched by the game.

min: The game seems to have picked up the last minute or so, as Bale fires high and wide after a break from Spurs.

min: Break in play here with Didier Drogba seemingly injured on the pitch.

min: We are back underway. I wonder whether the momentary break can inject some life into the encounter...

min: A wonderful pass from Lampard releases Ashley Cole down the left, but the England defender's cross is poor and easily cleared by William Gallas.

min: I would be surprised to see Drogba emerge for the second period - he looks like he is struggling. Could Fernando Torres have a say in today's encounter?

min: We will play one additional minute here at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea on the attack.

min +1: Tottenham so nearly take the lead just before the break with a strike from Rafael Van der Vaart, but Petr Cech makes a fine double save to keep the score level. The best moment of the match.

HALF TIME: Not a great opening half of football here at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have enjoyed the better moments, but Tottenham have registered the only shot on target through Van der Vaart on the stroke of the interval. Let's hope for a much improved second half.

min: We are underway in the second period, with Tottenham showing some quicker passing in the early stages.

min: Good work from Sturridge down the left wing, but his cross is met by Parker, with Ramires closing in on the Spurs goal.

min: Much better from Chelsea; Drogba, Ramires and Sturridge have all been involved in the early stages of the second half. Still no clear chance for the home side, however.

min: Big chance for Chelsea after good work from Drogba releases Sturridge, but the England striker dragged wide when he might have done better.

min: Tottenham look completely different to the side that terrorised teams earlier in the season. The likes of Bale and Luka Modric have failed to influence this encounter thus far.

min: Big chance for Tottenham as Bale finally comes to life and releases Walker, but his shot hits the side netting.

min: Chance for Chelsea as Juan Mata is released in the area, but he loses his footing at the vital moment. Much better game here.

min: David Luiz is introduced to the match in place of Jose Bosingwa.

min: Another penalty shout for the home side as Ramires fumbles in the area under the challenge of Benoit Assou-Ekotto, but no decision is forthcoming.

min: Another free kick comes to nothing for Chelsea, as Drogba finds the first man in the Spurs defence. It is the home side pushing for the winner as we approach the latter stages.

min: It's a cheap free kick for Chelsea as Van der Vaart brings Michael Essien to the ground. Yet again, however, it comes to nothing.

min: Break in play here with Kaboul down injured. Will we have a late winner at Stamford Bridge this afternoon?

min: Mata so nearly gives Chelsea the lead with a thumping free kick, but his effort smashes off the post.

min: Changes for both teams, with Torres introduced in place of Essien for the home side. And Louis Saha and Jake Livermore will join us in place of Van der Vaart and Sandro for Spurs. Free kick to Spurs in a dangerous position.

min: What a chance for Spurs as Modric whips the ball into a dangerous area, but William Gallas can only head over the bar.

min: Chance! Tottenham so nearly take the lead as Adebayor rounds the goalkeeper, but Cahill blocks his effort on the line. Bale rattles the post from the resulting corner - the away side should be ahead.

min: Big five minutes for both teams season is upon us here. Can someone grab a winner?

min: A stinging effort from Lampard is gathered by Brad Friedel as both sides search for the winner.

min: Salomon Kalou will join us in place of Sturridge with a little over one minute remaining of normal time.

min: We will play an additional four minutes of added time.

min +2: Good challenge from Cahill as Bale advances on goal, corner to Tottenham in the latter stages, but it comes to nothing.

min +5: Fine save from Cech at the death, as he denies Bale a winner.

FULL TIME: So there we have it, a drab encounter at Stamford Bridge ends goalless. Tottenham had the better of the chances, and might have won it, but Harry Redknapp will surely settle for a point as they remain five points clear of Chelsea, who sit fifth. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for the action.
