Drogba: 'I wanted penalty opportunity'

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has revealed that he was delighted to reignite his goalscoring career at the Blues the same way his previous spell ended.

The 36-year-old's last strike from the club came as he fired them to victory over Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League in 2012 with the winning spot kick in their penalty shootout.

Drogba scored Chelsea's first goal in their 6-0 drubbing of Maribor at Stamford Bridge, although boss Jose Mourinho was not happy that Eden Hazard gave up his penalty-taking duties.

The striker told Sky Sports News: "To finish [my time at Chelsea] with a penalty and start again with a penalty was nice symmetry. I am really happy because of the way we played today. We scored one, then two and didn't stop, we continued to play.

"I wanted to score that goal. I asked him [Eden Hazard] and he said it was OK. This is the spirit we have in this team. We share goals and we are happy when everyone is scoring and it will help me for my confidence."

Loic Remy sustained an injury in the victory at Stamford Bridge, and with Diego Costa already on the sidelines, those setbacks leave Mourinho short of options for his side's clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

However, Drogba has admitted that he is ready to fill the void, despite his own struggles with fitness this season.

He added: "The manager will decide but I am available for the team as always."

Chelsea are top of Champions League Group G following their win this evening.
