Matthaus: 'Immobile is no Lewandowski'

Lothar Matthaus is not convinced that newly-acquired Borussia Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile is up to the task of replacing Robert Lewandowski.

The Bundesliga giants snapped up the Italian hitman from Torino on a five-year deal on Monday, with Lewandowski poised to complete a switch to Bayern Munich.

However, the Germany legend does not believe that Immobile will prove a fitting replacement for the Bavaria-bound marksman next season.

"He is a player with skill and potential, but I'm sorry, he can't replace Lewandowski," he told Sky Sport Germany.

"He is not a striker like Robert, who runs long distances. Immobile stays in the centre more, but Lewandowski is not a classical penalty area striker."

The 24-year-old finished as Serie A's leading goalscorer last season, scoring 22 times in 33 league appearances for the Turin-based outfit.
