Dortmund overcome Dresden threat to reach DFB-Pokal quarter-finals

Dortmund overcome Dresden threat

Borussia Dortmund battled to a 2-0 victory over third-tier side Dynamo Dresden in the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal this evening.

Ciro Immobile opened the scoring for Dortmund early in the second half after the striker intercepted a cross-field pass before securing the victory in injury time.

The Bundesliga club failed to break the deadlock in the first half against Dresden, who play in 3. Liga, despite efforts from Mats Hummels and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

However, the most notable incident of the opening half was when Dortmund playmaker Marco Reus hobbled off with a suspected ankle injury.

Immobile ensured that Dortmund got off to the perfect start in the second half, scoring in the 50th minute after calmly slotting past Patrick Wieger.

Adrian Ramos had a great chance to double Dortmund's lead before Immobile sealed the game for the away side with his eighth goal of the season.

Dresden could not respond, meaning that Dortmund qualified for the quarter-finals in a competition they last won in 2012.
