Preview: Bolton Wanderers vs. Charlton Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic enter their midweek contest level on points after 29 League One games.

The hosts will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run to six matches, while the Addicks have not lost in any of their previous four league encounters.

After 24 league games, Bolton sat only three points above the relegation zone, but having picked up 13 points from their last five matches, they are now 10 points clear of danger.

With more than a third of the season left to play, Bolton may be dreaming of closing the 13-point gap to the playoff places.

In the short term, the Trotters will be hoping that they can return to winning ways after a run of four consecutive victories was brought to an end on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Morecambe in a game that had to be stopped for 10 minutes due to crowd disorder and allegations of racist abuse.

Bolton looked to be heading for a defeat after Ricardo Santos was shown a red card in the 69th minute and despite missing the resulting penalty, Cole Stockton grabbed the opener just minutes later.

Despite trailing and being a man light, Bolton continued to search for an equaliser and duly found it in the fifth minute of stoppage time, with Amadou Bakayoko sweeping home to protect his side's unbeaten run, and they will look to carry the momentum from the late equaliser into Tuesday's contest.

Meanwhile, Charlton are also enjoying a fine run of form after collecting maximum points from their last three games.

Following victories over Fleetwood Town and Portsmouth, the Addicks welcomed AFC Wimbledon to The Valley on Saturday for a League One contest that turned out to be a five-goal thriller.

Ethan Chislett gave the Dons an early lead, but goals from Ryan Inniss and Conor Washington turned the game in Charlton's favour before Ben Heneghan levelled before half time.

After an entertaining first period, the encounter would only see one more goal, which fell the way of the hosts as Akin Famewo headed home Albie Morgan's corner to guide his side to a 3-2 victory.

The Addicks turned a corner on the road, with a 2-1 win over Portsmouth ending a five-game winless away run in the league, and they will be hoping that their latest away trip also results in three more points.

Team News

After signing for Bolton Wanderers on transfer deadline day, Kyle Dempsey made his debut as a second-half substitute on Saturday, and he could be given his first start for the Trotters in midweek.

Meanwhile, Xavier Amaechi is nearing a return from injury, but Tuesday's contest is likely to come too soon for the 21-year-old.

With Santos suspended, Gethin Jones is expected to return to the Bolton backline against Charlton.

As for the visitors, Jake Forster-Caskey and Jayden Stockley are both expected to miss the game due to injury problems.

On Saturday, Corey Blackett-Taylor had to be withdrawn after 12 minutes due to a hamstring issue, and his replacement Diallang Jaiyesimi could be given a starting berth on Tuesday.

Scott Fraser made his debut with a second-half appearance against Wimbledon, and the January signing could come into the starting lineup for the midweek contest.

Bolton Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Trafford; Aimson, Jones, Johnston; Fossey, Williams, Morley, John; Dempsey, Charles, Afolayan

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
MacGillivray; Clare, Inniss, Famewo; Matthews, Gilbey, Dobson, Fraser, Jaiyesimi; Washington, Aneke

We say: Bolton Wanderers 2-1 Charlton Athletic

Although Charlton have enjoyed a fine run of form in recent weeks, Bolton have won six of their last eight home games in all competitions, and we think that the Trotters will utilise home advantage to edge out the Addicks on Tuesday.
