Phil Gartside to cut wage bill at Bolton Wanderers by 50%

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside confirms that the club will have to cut their wage bill by 50% due to the financial deficit acquired from dropping into the Championship.

Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside has insisted that a number of players will leave the club this summer in order to bring down the wage bill at the Reebok Stadium.

The Trotters were relegated to the Championship on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday and Gartside has recognised that changes will be made in order to maintain the club's finances.

"If you look at our wage bill this year compared to what it was last year, allowing for a couple of people to come in, it will be up to 50% of what we paid out last year," Gartside told BBC Radio Manchester.

"That flexibility is essential when you are going to lose £25m of revenue. You've got to dust yourself off and get on with life. It's not the end of the world - we've got a plan and we'll implement that plan. This was always going to be a year when we restructured the club."

Meanwhile, Gartside is confident that manager Owen Coyle will continue to lead the Trotters next season.
