Blackpool match with Huddersfield Town abandoned after pitch invasion

Blackpool's Championship fixture with Huddersfield Town is abandoned after Tangerines fans invade the pitch at Bloomfield Road to protest against club chairman Karl Oyston.

Blackpool's Championship game with Huddersfield Town has been abandoned after fans invaded the pitch at Bloomfield Road to vent their frustration at club chairman Karl Oyston.

Both sets of players beat a hasty retreat in the early moments of the second half as fans headed to the edge of the pitch, facing the director's box, to protest at Oyston's running of the Tangerines.

Supporters could be seen holding "Oyston Out" banners, while Oyston remained in his seat. Fans also protested outside the ground prior to kickoff.

Police tried to remove protesters from the pitch as fans then tried to further delay proceedings by sitting down in the centre circle.

With the players off the pitch for more than an hour and Blackpool fans still occupying the pitch, the decision was taken to abandon the game.

Oyston came in for criticism earlier this week after the club removed a statue of 1954 FA Cup final hero Stan Mortensen from outside Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool will drop into League One after picking up only four wins and failing to register a single victory away from home for the first time since the 1908-09 season.
