Xherdan Shaqiri suffers thigh injury

Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri leaves the Switzerland squad to have a thigh injury assessed by his club doctors.

Switzerland winger Xherdan Shaqiri has returned to Bayern Munich for tests after picking up a thigh injury on international duty.

Shaqiri picked up the problem during last Friday's 2-1 win over Albania, which earned the Swiss a place in next summer's World Cup finals.

Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has revealed that Shaqiri returned to Munich for an examination from Bayern club doctors last night, ruling him out of tomorrow's final qualifier against Slovenia.

The former Bayern boss told the Bundesliga's official website: "In situations like this you have to leave the responsibility to the player and the club."

The 22-year-old is now rated as doubtful for Bayern's return to Bundesliga action this weekend, which comes against Mainz 05.
