Bayern Munich chief makes U-turn on Douglas Costa stance

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge challenges Douglas Costa to replicate the form of his first season at Bayern Munich, having been linked with a move away in recent weeks.

Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has appeared to rule out selling Douglas Costa this summer, urging the winger to prove that he is good enough for his place at the club.

Rummenigge revealed earlier this week that the 26-year-old would be free to leave the Allianz Arena if his asking price was met, which is reportedly in the region of £35m.

Tottenham Hotspur and Chinese club Jiangsu Suning are both said to have shown an interest in the Brazil international, but Bayern chief Rummenigge insists that there is still a place for him in Bavaria if he can replicate the form he showed two years ago.

"I always found [Costa] an interesting player," ESPN quotes him as saying. "All he has to do is reach the same level again that he was playing at during his first season with us."

Costa scored four goals and assisted 14 more in 27 Bundesliga appearances under Pep Guardiola, but he was restricted to just 14 starts last time out in Carlo Ancelotti's first season at the helm.
