Stefan Effenberg: 'Pep Guardiola must deliver in Champions League'

Pep Guardiola will be judged on whether he can win the Champions League with Bayern Munich, according to Stefan Effenberg.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg has claimed that Pep Guardiola will be judged on whether he can win the Champions League this season.

Guardiola has entered the final year of his contract with plenty of speculation surrounding his future as he refuses to suggest whether he will consider signing an extension before next summer.

The Spaniard has won the Bundesliga title in each of his two seasons with the club, but his failure to deliver success in Europe puts him under pressure after Jupp Heynckes clinched the treble in his final campaign in 2013.

"Guardiola is a world-class coach. But he has to prove now that he can win the Champions League with this squad, because that's what FC Bayern are expecting," Effenberg told Sky.

"Furthermore, there is an appeal to be the first team with four Bundesliga titles in a row. That's the motivation for Bayern"

Bayern begin their Bundesliga campaign against Hamburger SV on Friday night.
