Thomas Tuchel: 'Bayern Munich will not underestimate Manchester United'

Tuchel: 'Bayern will not underestimate Man United'

Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel has suggested that some of the well-documented issues at Manchester United have been made bigger because of the club's status.

On Wednesday evening, the two teams will be locking horns in a competitive match for the first time in nine years when they square off at the Allianz Arena.

They enter the competition as dark horses to mount a charge for the trophy, particularly Bayern now that they have Harry Kane in their attack.

Nevertheless, neither team has been convincing this season, Bayern having to battle to a win over Borussia Monchengladbach before the international break and being held to a 2-2 draw by Bayer Leverkusen in their first game back.

That said, United are currently well off the pace in the Premier League, suffering defeats to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion during their opening five-match period.

Furthermore, Erik ten Hag has been having to cope with a number of issues within his squad, including a falling out with Jadon Sancho and domestic abuse allegations aimed at Antony.

The future of Harry Maguire remains a constant topic for debate, too, although reports of a bust-up in the changing room after losing to Brighton has since been dismissed.

Commenting on the situation at Old Trafford, Tuchel has indicated that he feels that some of it is just "noise", insisting that United will not be underestimated by his squad.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, the German said: "There is always a lot of noise around Manchester United. A lot of pundits in the UK are from Manchester United. You have a legacy from [Sir] Alex Ferguson which creates expectations around the club.

"All of us, me in Bayern and my colleague at Man Utd, want to achieve the same things. It is pretty common at Man Utd that little things become a bit bigger or the talking is a bit noisier.

"From what I know, they have a coaching environment where players can grow. That is what we do, to instil principles and rules to create a winning culture.

"For me it is evident to see the way I see Man Utd play. The results maybe don't but it is a team full of quality and we will never underestimate them."

Bayern have never lost to United in five home fixtures in the Champions League, while the Premier League outfit have prevailed on just one occasion in eight attempts since their famous triumph in the 1999 final.
