Xavi to stay at Barcelona

Barcelona announce that veteran midfielder Xavi is poised to snub a move to New York City FC in favour of remaining in Catalunya.

Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Xavi Hernandez will remain at Camp Nou beyond the summer, despite intense speculation linking him to the MLS.

The Spain international was heavily rumored to be joining up with David Villa and Frank Lampard with newly-formed franchise New York City FC during the close-season.

However, the Blaugrana's sporting director Andoni Zubizaretta claims that the 34-year-old is now intending to stay at his "home" in Catalunya.

"At the start of the week Xavi informed us that he was continuing with Barca," Zubizaretta told reporters.

"The door is always open to Xavi. What could be better than the news that he is staying? This is his home.

"[Coach] Luis Enrique's plans don't change because Xavi is staying. Having Xavi on the team is a very positive thing. Xavi will wear our number six for as long as he wants."

Lampard sealed his switch to the burgeoning MLS side earlier today.
