Barcelona transfer news: Will the Catalan giants sign a central midfielder?

Barca boss Flick reveals whether Catalan giants will sign a central midfielder

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has suggested that his club will not be signing any central midfielders this summer, claiming that he has "enough players" in that area of the field.

At this moment, Barcelona's only first-team arrival this summer has been Pau Victor, with the 22-year-old forward arriving on a permanent basis from Girona following a successful loan spell at Barcelona B last term.

However, the Catalan outfit are said to be closing in on the signing of Spain international Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig.

Barcelona have also been linked with a number of central midfielders this summer, and they recently allowed Oriol Romeu to return on loan to Girona for the 2024-25 campaign.

However, Flick has said that signing a new holding midfielder is not a priority for the club despite the fact that Pedri, Gavi and Frenkie de Jong are all currently on the sidelines through injury.

Flick happy with midfield options amid transfer talk

"We have several injured midfielders with great quality. When they come back we will be a better team and I think I have enough players there," he told reporters after Tuesday's friendly with AC Milan.

Barcelona rounded off their US Tour with a 2-2 draw against Milan, before losing on penalties to the Italian giants.

Andreas Christensen and Marc Casado started in central midfield against the Serie A team, with Ilkay Gundogan operating in an advanced role behind Robert Lewandowski, who grabbed a brace in Maryland.

"When we all press with intensity, that's the way to go. Sometimes we have to be braver because it's necessary. After the break we improved, we changed. It was fantastic how we pressed, the whole team was intense," Flick said on Tuesday.

Flick pleased with Barcelona's US Tour

"This is what we want. In the second half, we had several chances and they had problems.

"I want us to enjoy defending and attacking together. There are 10 days to go until the league opener, we are heading in the right direction but we can improve a lot.

"The balance of the tour has been very positive. We had a lot of young players, their quality is enormous. Some players have improved over the last few days. They are adapting to what we want to see."

Barcelona drew 2-2 with Man City in their US Tour opener at the end of last month before recording a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid ahead of their 2-2 draw with Milan.

The Catalan side will now face Monaco in the Joan Gamper Trophy fixture on August 12 before opening their 2024-25 La Liga campaign against Valencia on August 17.
