Ronald Koeman 'sacked on flight home from Rayo defeat'

Barcelona president Joan Laporta reportedly relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as head coach during the team's flight home from Wednesday's La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano.

Radamel Falcao scored the only goal of the contest, as Rayo recorded a 1-0 victory over Barcelona in Madrid, and the defeat proved to be the final straw for the Catalan club's board.

Koeman's departure as head coach was announced on Wednesday evening, and according to Sport, the Dutchman was sacked before the team's flight had landed back in Barcelona.

The report claims that Laporta was 'very angry' with the defeat to Rayo and consulted members of staff and other club directors before communicating the decision to the manager.

Koeman leaves Camp Nou having taken charge of 67 matches in all competitions, boasting a record of 39 wins, 12 draws and 16 defeats.

Legendary midfielder Xavi, who is currently in charge of Al Sadd, is the favourite to become the club's next head coach.
