Xavi: 'Barcelona need Lionel Messi at Real Madrid'

Barcelona legend Xavi feels that winning at Real Madrid is an unenviable task for the Catalans without the services of Lionel Messi ahead of El Clasico.

Xavi has claimed that Barcelona's hopes of beating fierce Liga rivals Real Madrid in Saturday's El Clasico hinge on whether Lionel Messi plays a role at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner has been sidelined since September with a knee injury, but the Argentine is expected to mark his return in timely fashion this weekend.

Messi's teammate Luis Suarez revealed that the 28-year-old was 'feeling good' physically, and legendary Barca midfielder Xavi says that Luis Enrique needs his prized asset if they are to win.

"I think the teams are of a similar level if Messi doesn't play," Xavi told ESPN. "Madrid have injuries, but their injuries are not as important as the one to Messi.

"Madrid are very strong this season. They are very organised with two lines of four. Physically, they're strong. People say that [Madrid coach Rafael] Benitez is defensive and yes, they've conceded fewer goals [seven] than any other team.

"But Madrid have also scored more (26) than any other team. It's difficult to win in the [Santiago] Bernabeu; very, very difficult without him. But I think Barca are in a good moment to do good things."

The table-topping Blaugrana sit three points clear of the second-placed Blancos.
