UEFA fine Barcelona for supporters' pro-Catalan display

European football governing body UEFA fines Barcelona £21,000 for displaying pro-Catalan independence flags during the Champions League final last month.

Barcelona have been handed a £21,000 fine by UEFA after their supporters displayed pro-Catalan independence flags at last month's Champions League final.

Fans of the La Liga club continued their long-running tradition during the showpiece final at Berlin's Olympiastadion.

The European football governing body adjudged that Barca breached Article 16 of the regulations, which prohibits "the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit a message that is not fit for a sports event".

Barcelona went on to beat Juventus 3-1 to secure a domestic and European treble under Luis Enrique.
