Augsburg vs Bayern - prediction, team news, lineups

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich continue their quest for another title on Saturday when they face hosts Augsburg at WWK Arena.

The third-placed home side claimed three points when they beat Freiburg 3-1 on August 23, whereas Bayern are first after they opened the new season with a 6-0 victory against RB Leipzig on August 22.

Match preview

Augsburg's three goals against Freiburg was the first time they had netted at least three times since late February, a period encompassing 13 games, and they scored one or fewer goals in 11 of those matches.

Manager Sandro Wagner was appointed in May after the end of the 2024-25 season, and his current role is his first ever job as head coach of a professional side, with the German having arrived after a stint as assistant to Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann.

Fuggerstadter have conceded at least three goals in each of their past six meetings with Bayern, and they were beaten in all six clashes.

Wagner's team won 2-0 against Hallescher in the DFB-Pokal in the middle of August in their opening 2025-26 fixture, and they have now won as many matches this term as they did in their final nine of 2024-25, a stretch in which they lost five times.

Augsburg's clash on Saturday will be their first match at WWK Arena this season, and a win would be their first at the stadium in five games, as well as just the second time they would have avoided defeat at home in those outings.

Bayern's win against Leipzig was the 17th time under boss Vincent Kompany that they have scored at least four goals, and they have netted 11 times in their three fixtures of 2025-26.

The Bavarians have only kept one clean sheet this season, though, while only preventing their opponents from netting once in their last seven competitive fixtures.

Kompany will be delighted by the hard work of his players, who covered 125.4km against Leipzig, the most distance ever by the club in a Bundesliga game since tracking data was collected in 2011.

The margin of the team's win against Leipzig mean they have been at the summit of the table since their third matchday of 2024-25.

Bayern participated in the Club World Cup this summer, and while they triumphed in three and were defeated in two of their games at the tournament, they did beat Stuttgart in the German Super Cup on August 16 and won 3-2 against Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on August 27.

The visitors are unbeaten away from home in 12 matches with the club emerging as victors on eight occasions.

Team News

Augsburg striker Samuel Essende is suspended for one more game following his red card in the final match of 2024-25, and his absence means that Mert Komur is likely to continue up front.

Number six Kristijan Jakic may be stationed between number eights Han-Noah Massengo and Robin Fellhauer.

Chrislain Matsima, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Keven Schlotterbeck were deployed in a back three against Freiburg, and they will need to perform at their best if they are to stifle the visitors.

Winger Luis Diaz scored with his only two efforts for Bayern against Leipzig, and while he will not want to ruin his 100% conversion rate, he is sure to have more opportunities in front of goal.

Joshua Kimmich is certain to support the likes of Diaz and Harry Kane from a deeper position in midfield.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is still the number one between the posts despite being 39, and he will hope that centre-backs Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah can protect him from facing too many shots.

Augsburg possible starting lineup:

Dahmen; Matsima, Gouweleeuw, Schlotterbeck; Wolf, Fellhauer, Jakic, Massengo, Giannoulis; Komur, Saad

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:

Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Tah, Stanisic; Kimmich, Goretzka; Olise, Gnabry, Diaz; Kane

We say: Augsburg 1-3 Bayern Munich

Given Augsburg have started the season in fine form, they could find their way onto the scoresheet, but their performances at WWK Arena at the end of last season were concerning.

Bayern Munich's goalscoring record under Kompany is phenomenal, and if the likes of Diaz and Kane are at their best on the weekend, then it is difficult to see the away side not taking all three points.
