Arsenal transfer news: Arteta’s joker could be the next to swap the Premier League for the Bundesliga

Arteta’s joker at Arsenal could be the next to swap the Premier League for the Bundesliga

The transfer activity between English and German clubs remains lively. Following Bayern Munich's signing of Luis Diaz from Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund are now reportedly targeting another Premier League star.

According to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard is on Dortmund’s radar. The 30-year-old is under contract with the Gunners until 2026 but has yet to agree a renewal, and a move this summer is said to be "possible".

Dortmund see Trossard as Gittens replacement

Niko Kovac is looking to strengthen his attacking options following Jamie Bynoe-Gittens’s £48.5m (€57.2m) switch to Chelsea. The current options in Dortmund's frontline include Karim Adeyemi, Maximilian Beier and Serhou Guirassy, with Julian Brandt and Jobe Bellingham also capable of playing in more advanced wide positions.

Kovac typically favours a three-man defence, which puts greater emphasis on attacking dynamism. Attributes such as pressing, passing accuracy, pace and finishing are crucial in this system — qualities Trossard has demonstrated consistently.

The Belgian international featured in 56 matches for Arsenal during the 2024-25 campaign and was directly involved in 20 goals. With several injuries in the Gunners' squad last season, he was frequently deployed in various roles across the frontline, acting as a versatile "joker" in Mikel Arteta’s system — including appearances as a centre-forward, attacking midfielder and right-winger.

Trossard under threat from potential Eze arrival?

Arsenal have strengthened their attack this summer with the arrivals of Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres, and they are also expecting Kai Havertz to return from injury. The club are reportedly targeting another attacking addition in Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze. These developments could limit Trossard’s opportunities for regular starts.

In addition to Dortmund’s interest, the Belgian has received two "concrete" offers from unnamed Premier League clubs.

Trossard's current market value is estimated at €22m (£18.6m). With two years left on his deal, Arsenal may see this window as the right moment to sell.

Last summer, Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad made an offer worth around €35m (£29.6m), which was rejected by the Gunners.
