Danny Welbeck heads Arsenal to victory

Danny Welbeck scores the only goal as Arsenal beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in the Premier League.

Arsenal have moved back into the top four in the Premier League after Danny Welbeck found the back of the net with a header in the second half against West Bromwich Albion this afternoon.

Arsenal started the match on the front foot, but early shots from Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez went straight into the hands of Ben Foster.

The visitors continued to look the more likely in the opening 45 minutes, with Welbeck forcing a save from the West Brom keeper as he tried to squeeze the ball in after Sanchez had hit the wall with a free kick.

Aaron Ramsey could have opened the scoring just before the break when a mistake from Youssouf Mulumbu allowed Cazorla to collect a loose ball on the edge of the box and pass to the Welshman, but his finish was a fraction wide.

West Brom made a brighter start to the second half as Saido Berahino fired the ball into the side-netting while looking to open the scoring, but the angle was too tight for the striker.

Despite the Baggies' resurgence after the break, it was Arsenal who opened the scoring on the hour mark when Cazorla got the better of Andre Wisdom before crossing in for Welbeck, who forced the ball past Foster with a powerful header.

Craig Gardner tried to get the home side back on level terms with an ambitious effort from range, but the shot took a deflection, leaving it to bounce harmlessly to Damian Martinez.

The hosts came closer inside the final 10 minutes when Graham Dorrans crossed the ball in for Berahino, but the England international's header clattered back off the bar.

Gardner had another effort from outside the box as the match headed into stoppage time, but it was deflected behind off Ramsey, ensuring that Arsenal held on for the win.

The result moves Arsenal back above Manchester United for the time being, while West Brom sit 15th.
