Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says that he must "repay" Gareth Southgate's faith in him after earning a recall to the England squad.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere has said that he "never gave up hope" of forcing his way back into the England squad.

On Thursday, Gareth Southgate selected Wilshere in his group of players for the upcoming friendlies with the Netherlands and Italy, with the Arsenal midfielder expected to make his first international outing since Euro 2016.

Wilshere is back in the squad after featuring for the Gunners on 31 occasions in all competitions this season, and the playmaker admits that he must now "repay" the faith of the Three Lions boss.

The 26-year-old is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "It's always an honour to play for my country - I've said that many times. I never gave up hope - I believed in myself and I believed in my ability.

"It was just about getting games in the Premier League, as the manager said. I've done that and now it's down to me to repay him."

Since making his debut in 2010, Wilshere has scored twice in 34 appearances for his country.
