Martin Keown says that Alexandre Lacazette 'does not deserve' to be dropped to the bench for big matches, having been overlooked for selection against Manchester City.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has insisted that he 'does not understand' why Arsene Wenger again decided to overlook Alexandre Lacazette for selection against Manchester City.

The marquee summer signing found himself on the bench for the opening 56 minutes of Sunday's 3-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium, much like he did earlier this season when the Gunners went down 4-0 to Liverpool.

Lacazette made a point by scoring what proved to be a consolation goal for Arsenal at 2-0 down, temporarily dragging his side back into the game with goal number six of the league campaign, and Keown is unsure why the striker is not being used from the off in big matches.

"I do not understand why Lacazette did not start," he wrote in his Daily Mail column. "This was the second big game after the defeat at Liverpool that he has started on the bench.

"I don't think he deserves that. Any doubts about Arsenal's record signing were erased when he came on and scored."

France international Lacazette joined Arsenal from Lyon for a club-record fee of £52.7m in July.
