Arsene Wenger "extremely confident" that Damian Martinez will shine

Wenger backs Martinez to shine

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is "extremely confident" that third-choice goalkeeper Damian Martinez is up to the task of facing Anderlecht in the Champions League tonight.

Martinez, 22, is poised to make just his third Gunners appearance after a combination of suspension and injury have ruled out Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina respectively.

The Spaniard enjoyed a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season, and Wenger claims that experience will stand him in good stead at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.

"[I am] extremely confident, because he has experience from Sheffield last year and when he played for us, he did very well. I have no special worry about that," he told reporters.

"He is two years older now [than his last Arsenal match], has a good experience. He has grown in stature as well.

"We have to make sure we make it as comfortable a night as we can for him, and that is by defending well as a team."

Martinez started two of Arsenal's Capital One Cup outings in the 2012-13 campaign - a 6-1 win over Coventry City followed by a 7-5 victory away to Reading.
