Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that expanding the Champions League to 64 teams would damage the quality of the elite tournament.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that expanding the Champions League would be "detrimental" to the elite competition.

UEFA have announced that they plan to discuss scrapping the Europa League and instead allow 64 teams to enter the Champions League, which would permit the top seven of the Premier League to compete in the tournament.

"I'm not convinced because the Champions League already has audience problems in the group stage," London24 quotes Wenger as saying. "I think that would create more and lower the level. It would mean that you create a complete European championship.

"That could be detrimental to the national leagues as well and could take some interest out of the first stages of the Champions League. It would be a European league."

Meanwhile, the Gunners will need to defeat Olympiakos next week in order to top Group B and grab the advantage heading into the knockout rounds.
