The hosts finished the afternoon session on 413-7 in response to the tourists' first-innings score of 182 runs.
The Indians were 282-3 at lunch with Sachin Tendulkar being dismissed in his 200th and final Test match for 74 runs.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli built on that during the afternoon, with the former scoring 113 runs and the latter hitting 57.
Rohit Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are currently on the crease on 44 and four respectively.
