FIFA Corruption Scandal

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani (C) raises the World Cup trophy as he stands with FIFA president Sepp Blatter (R) after Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich on December 2, 2010

FIFA was rocked by a fresh corruption scandal when seven football officials were arrested in Zurich on May 27 over allegations of bribery, money laundering and racketeering. The Swiss and US authorities have confirmed that 14 people overall have been indicted after more than $100m (£65m) was allegedly accepted in bribes from the 1990s to the present day.

A separate investigation looking into the allocation of the 2018 Russia World Cup and 2022 Qatar World Cup has also been opened. As a result of these allegations, pressure is mounting on FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
