Michel Platini to lose UEFA support?

Michel Platini reportedly risks losing the support of a number of UEFA nations in his bid to become FIFA president should he fail to give assurances over a £1.35m payment.

A number of countries are considering withdrawing their support for Michel Platini to become the next FIFA president, according to reports.

The reigning UEFA president has been questioned over a £1.35m payment from Sepp Blatter in 2011 that the Frenchman claims was a delayed sum for work carried out between 1998 and 2002.

Blatter, who also denies wrongdoing, is under criminal investigation over the payment, while several nations are demanding assurances from Platini.

The 54 UEFA members will meet in Switzerland on Thursday to discuss the situation, with officials from Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark having requested an explanation from the 60-year-old.

UEFA had previously insisted that they are "fully behind" Platini, while England's FA has also pledged its support to the former France international.

Platini has been in charge at UEFA since 2007 and was considered one of the leading candidates to succeed Blatter in February's FIFA elections.
